Obituary

Shirley Barnes, age 85, of Carroll, Ohio, passed away peacefully on December 19. She was born to Doyle and Erma Taylor on January 24, 1940, in Berlin Heights, Ohio, and lived a life devoted to family, faith, and community.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Art Barnes, and her son, Roy Barnes. She is survived by her daughters Ruth (Hugh) Koogan of Temperance, Michigan, and Wendy (Jeff) Andrews of Sugar Grove, Ohio; her brother Richard (Sandy) Taylor of Medina, Ohio; and her cherished grandchildren James Barnes, Sean Koogan, Philip (Jenny) Koogan, Craig (Makensie) Andrews, and Marissa (Ian) Ferguson, along with multiple great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

After she and Art retired, they moved from Sylvania, Ohio to Leesburg, Florida, where they enjoyed family, friends, and traveling until Art’s passing in 2009. In 2013, Shirley moved to Gahanna, Ohio to be closer to her children and grandchildren, where she remained until moving to Carroll in January of 2025. Shirley was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an active member of First Baptist Church of Gahanna, where she dedicated much of her time and energy to service and fellowship. She also enjoyed genealogy, spending countless hours researching family history and preserving stories for future generations.

She will be remembered for her steadfast faith, her devotion to family, and her commitment to preserving history and community values.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at noon at First Baptist Church of Gahanna, followed by a meal. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to First Baptist Church of Gahanna or a charity of choice in her honor.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Carroll Place Assisted Living and Capital City Hospice for the loving care provided to Shirley during the last year of her life.
